IEEE-USA Presents Journalism Awards, $3,000 in Honoraria to Three Who Have Added to Greater Engineering Awareness

IEEE-USA President Ron Jensen and Past President Evelyn Hirt will present Mason with a plaque and $1,500 honorarium for increasing public understanding of engineering.

Mason’s ScienceNews Radio Network, which originates from the Dallas area, provides weekly broadcasts to radio stations across the country. The one-hour shows specialize in emerging science, open innovation, nanotechnology and engineering. See http://www.promiseoftomorrow.biz/

Bryan Mealer and William Kamkwamba, authors of the book, "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," will also be recognized Saturday for telling "the inspiring story" of how engineering can change the world. They will receive their plaques and $1,500 honorarium at a later date.

Last year, a special luncheon was held for Washington sci-tech journalists to celebrate the 2010 awards to Holly Morris from Washington's FOX 5 Morning News and Randy Atkins of the National Academy of Engineering.

Past journalism award winners have included NPR's Richard Harris, The Chicago Tribune's Jon Van, and The Wall Street Journal's G. Pascal Zachary.

Nominations are open for this year's "Award for Distinguished Literary Contributions Furthering Public Understanding of the Profession," with a 31 July deadline.
