John W. Steadman,
P.E., Ph.D.

John W. Steadman is
Dean of the
College of Engineering at the
University of South Alabama and a licensed professional
engineer. Prior to his post at South Alabama,
he spent 32 years at the University of Wyoming (UW) as an
Electrical and Computer Engineering Department faculty member,
serving as the College's Associate Dean at one point, and as department
head for 14 years.
He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from
UW and a Ph.D. from Colorado State. Dr. Steadman worked for
General Dynamics in San Diego before joining the faculty and served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air
Force Academy.
Dr.
Steadman serves on the Department of Energy's
Fusion Energy Advisory Committee and as a member
of the U.S. Advisory Committee to the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization.
Dr. Steadman served as President of the National
Council of Examiners for Engineering and
Surveying (NCEES) (1993-1994) and has chair
several NCEES committees.
Dr. Steadman is an
active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,
the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society
for Engineering Education. He is a Fellow of ASEE and a Senior Member of IEEE.
In addition to serving as President of IEEE-USA in 2004, Steadman was IEEE-USA's Vice President for
Career Activities (2001-2002) and a chair/member of the IEEE-USA Licensure and Registration Committee. His
contributions to IEEE have included being associate editor for IEEE Micro,
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society AdCom, Program Evaluator
for ABET, and President of the Denver Section Engineering in Medicine and
Biology Society.In addition to the IEEE-USA Citation of Honor, he
has received the Denver Section John D. Peebles Award and awards from the
Wyoming Student Branch and the IEEE Region V for his support of IEEE
activities.
Dr. Steadman has received several
awards, including the IEEE-USA Citation of Honor, the NCEES Distinguished
Service Award, and the AT&T Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Professor Steadman was appointed to the Engineering Registration Board in
Wyoming and served sixteen years for three Wyoming governors.
