Happy New Year from IEEE-USA!
As 2022 draws to a close, we reflect on another year of opportunities and challenges, and look forward with excitement to the year ahead. In 2023, IEEE-USA will celebrate 50 years of service to U.S. IEEE Members, and we'll be doing it in style on our 50th Anniversary Cruise in October. We sincerely hope that you'll be able to join us as we set sail for the tropical beauty of the Bahamas!
IEEE-USA's volunteers and staff have worked diligently throughout the year to support the careers and public policy interests of IEEE’s U.S. members. You can find more about all we do for you, and more about IEEE benefits and how to maximize your membership experience on the IEEE-USA website.
In 2022, thousands of IEEE Members took advantage of our award-winning career and professional development offerings, including our webinars, e-books, audiobooks, and our newly redesigned IEEE-USA InSight. We expanded our successful "IEEE is My Competitive Edge" national TV advertising campaign to reach nearly six million U.S. households, highlighting dynamic IEEE members who credit IEEE membership as a defining factor in their success. On the humanitarian front, our MOVE Community Outreach volunteers provided tireless support for disaster relief and recovery efforts in the wake of flooding in Kentucky, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in Florida. In September, the MOVE West Coast team supported its first disaster, the Border32 fire near San Diego.
On the public policy front, more than 300 U.S. IEEE members participated in meetings in April with legislators as part of this year's annual Congressional Visits Day (CVD). In August, the CHIPS and Science Act, backed by IEEE-USA, was signed into law. This bill represents the most significant research bill passed by Congress in many years. At its heart is the CHIPS Act itself -- a $56 billion investment in American semiconductor production. This includes $52.7 billion in direct subsidies and tax breaks for companies to move chip production back into the United States. The additional money is for workforce development, research, and $1.5 billion for 5G wireless technology deployment.
These examples represent just a few of the highlights from 2022. In 2023, we will strive to build upon these successes as we continue to support the career and public policy interests of U.S. IEEE Members. From our family to yours, we wish you health, peace and prosperity in the new year!
